It was no secret, though it probably should have been, that the Arizona Bar was looking into allegations of misconduct by Deputy County Attorney Juan Martinez that stemmed not only from his prosecution of Jodi Arias but included 10 other murder cases spanning a decade. Likely aware there were issues about Martinez’s conduct, County Attorney Bill Montgomery had assigned another prosecutor, Bob Shutts, to second chair Martinez during Arias’s retrial but that attorney never actually participated in the proceedings. I spoke to Shutts a few times to ask why he was there; he never answered the question. I assumed he was keeping an eye on Martinez though that was never confirmed.
