With the airing of specials marking the 20th anniversary of JonBenet Ramsey’s murder, I started to think about other well-known unsolved crimes. One of the most famous unsolved murders in the country just passed its 50th anniversary on September 18. On that date, in 1966, a brutal attack occurred in the expansive Kenilworth, Illinois estate of industry titan, Charles Percy, the former president of Bell & Howell. At the time, Percy was running for the United States Senate. The election was less than two months away. Of course, the brutal murder of his 21-year-old daughter Valerie put his campaign on hold. He would go on to win the election in November and serve three terms. Valerie was viciously attacked in the middle of the night in her bedroom. She was stabbed and bludgeoned beyond recognition.
